Maggie Richardson—Mary Blair’s niece and creator of Mary Blair ART WEAR

Maggie is excited to launch Mary Blair ART WEAR™️—a new line of fun apparel she has designed featuring her aunt's art. The collection’s production has been closely overseen by Maggie herself in collaboration with local manufacturing partners right here in Los Angeles including The Knit House LA and Soxnet Inc.

Aunt Mary was known for combining unexpected colors and textures in unique ways. Maggie's designs combine pieces of Mary Blair's personal art for apparel. It’s an idea that has been percolating and in production for some time and has been a way for Maggie to expand on Mary’s legacy and make her art accessible to more people. Not everyone can afford to acquire Mary's original art, but many more can splurge on a quality t-shirt or sweater and get to wear that art out into the world.

Maggie has drawn from Mary’s commercial illustrations from the 1950s and 60s for prominent American companies like Meadow Gold Dairy, Blue Bell children's clothing, and luxury department store Lord & Taylor. She has also sourced from personal art created to hang on Mary’s own walls or to give to family, friends or fellow artists.

“What I’m working on now with Mary Blair ART WEAR™️ is a way to bring her art to life by creating collage-style designs, much like she might have done herself. Her work always came together like a collage, blending colors and shapes in unique ways. I believe she would absolutely love seeing the spirit of her creativity continue and evolve.” Her work always came together like a collage, blending colors and shapes in unique ways. Maggie is the daughter of Mary Blair’s older sister Peggy. She grew up in the small town of Campbell, CA—near San Jose—along with her older sister Jeanne. Her creative energies always found ways to be expressed: photography, graphic design, and soft sculpture art doll production based on the iconic “moon-faced” children created by her beloved aunt Mary Blair.

In 2003, Maggie, her sister Jeanne and Mary’s son Kevin formed a small company with a new website for the purpose of sharing the personal art of Mary Blair and telling her story, along with that of her husband, Lee Blair, and her brother-in-law, Preston Blair.

The success of this website led to an exhibition of Mary’s art at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco and later with Studio Ghibli in Japan during the Summer of 2009. When Kevin Blair passed away unexpectedly in 2008, the estates were left to Maggie and Jeanne. Then after Jeanne’s death in 2023, Maggie became the family guardian of Mary Blair’s legacy—continuing to share her gifts to the many fans who love her art, and are inspired by her life.
