These Mary Blair "Cigarette Watermelon" unisex crew socks are printed with artwork created for a Pall Mall cigarette ad campaign in the 1950s. While Mary Blair ART WEAR is not endorsing smoking, this art was selected because it is significant in the evolution of Mary's illustrative style—representing her first foray into the emerging "pop art" style. Let your feet "pop" with these colorful socks.

History Behind the Art

This sock artwork is adapted from illustrations that Mary Blair created for Pall Mall cigarette ads in the 1950s. These ads ran in Life Magazine and on billboards across the country before Surgeon General warning labels were ever required for nicotine products. Mary was known for soaking up the culture all around her and reflecting it in her work and these "pop art" style illustrations are no exception.
